Among the throng of Columbia University student protesters gathered outside Hamilton Hall on campus early Tuesday morning was a gray-haired woman in her 60s. In a video captured by The New York Times, the protesters can be seen trying to push their way toward the building as the woman — decades older than the crowd — pleads with two young counterprotesters trying to block them from barricading the occupied building. “This is ridiculous,” the woman says, as the men stand with their backs against the doors, apparently trying to keep protesters away from the building. “We’re trying to end a genocide in Gaza.”The woman at the center of this encounter on the night protesters stormed and then occupied the building was Lisa Fithian, a longtime activist and trainer for left-wing protesters whom the Police Department would later publicly describe as a “confirmed professional agitator.”

Some of the hostages were held in sweltering tunnels deep beneath Gaza, while others were squeezed into tight quarters with strangers or confined in isolation. There were children forced to appear in hostage videos, and others forced to watch gruesome footage of Hamas’s Oct. 7 terrorist attack. As some hostages captured that day in the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel have been released, they have relayed these and other stories of their captivity to family members. The New York Times interviewed the family members of 10 freed hostages, who spoke on behalf of their relatives to relay sensitive information. The relatives who spoke to The Times described how the freed hostages, many of them children, were deprived of adequate food while in Gaza.

Hamas released 11 Israeli hostages — all women and children taken from Kibbutz Nir Oz — on Monday, the fourth day of the cease-fire, according to the Israeli government. And on Sunday, she was finally freed, as one of the hostages Hamas released under a deal with Israel. Was it as cool as playing tennis with Venus (if you can characterize my on-court performance relative to hers as “playing tennis”)? And I was amazed as we motored across the state, lock by lock through the Erie Canal, a waterway that I previously knew of only from middle school geography class. Yes, I’m a little obsessed with the Erie Canal — an outcome to reporting this story that I never anticipated. Because so much of my article about Geraldo Rivera needed to be about Geraldo Rivera, my cutting room floor is covered with details about the Canal. The purpose was to allow for the transport of goods and agriculture back and forth to the Midwest.

This was Day 1 of an eight-day voyage that Mr. Rivera and his brother Craig Rivera had embarked on to bring Geraldo’s boat from Hampton Bays, where he had spent an extended vacation with his wife and youngest daughter, to the suburbs of Cleveland, where they live.
